Review of "Heavy Surf"
|
he CD "Heavy Surf" is, according to cat. no. (RROO1), the first release on new cool surf label - Reptile Records from Glenwood Springs, US. It's compilation CD with 25 tracks featuring more and less known bands. They are presented with 1 or 2 tracks. Mark Brodie opens this CD with classical surf tune with weird intro. Next are The Heatscores. Their track is supercool acid psych surf - weird combination which I like a lot. Cadillac Angels are more instrumental r'n'r - cool, raw and dusty guitar sound - great band. 3 Balls Of Fire and "Rumble In The Congo" remind me a bit of The Mutants from Finland - really mind-blowing tune, groovy as hell with cool psych surf guitar through wah wah and other weird effects. Davie Allan And The Arrows are veterans of instro r'n'r surf scene. Well, I'm always a bit skeptical about old guys still playing, like Dick Dale. Still, I must admit Davie Allan And The Arrows sound fresh and rockin'. Lombego Surfers are great and wild with distorted guitars, but technically very clean and such combination sounds great. Very dangerous track to hear while driving. Daikaiju are one of the weirdest instro surf bands I ever heard. Sounds like progressive surf psych. I never heard anything like this before, but it works. Surf Report are raw and fast, but a bit more classical surf style. They are presented with 2 tracks that sound cool and modern. The Reventlos are also presented with 2 tracks. "King Kkong" is hard rockin'n surf (grunge surf). Cool mix! Robert Johnson And Punchdrunks are also cool and fast, wile Thesurfmotherfuckers covered early Cure hit "Killing An Arab". Cool oriental surf psych - great band! Insect Surfers are also cool - weird psychotic and wavey surf. Huevos Rancheros are one of the most known bands on this CD. Cool Latin acid surf with organ in background. If you can imagine Motorhead with surf guitar, you'll get Planet 7. They really have good sense for humor and they are very entertaining - "Lara's Theme" (from Doctor Zhivago movie) sounds soooooooo great: loud metal rhythm guitars + very gentle soloing surf guitar + weird spacey sounds - simply mind-blowing. Plank presented with 2 tracks are actually not surf, well instrumental - heavy, cool, but maybe too heavy. Surfin' Dead are some kinda psychobilly surf that I like a lot. The Surf Sluts are modern hot rod surf - one more dangerous track for car ride. Hillbilly Soul Surfers are cool swinging rockabilly surf. Chum have original sound. Their song starts mystic, then becomes very heavy and aggressive and ends more acid psych - weird band with lot of rhythm changes. Los Plantronics play "Satan Stole My Surfboard", satanic surf - weird and a bit too complex. After all, "Heavy Surf" is actually the best name for this CD. Lot of weird bands who dare to mix different styles with surf 'tamplate'.
