Review of "You Can't Escape Life"

dam Rich's second full-length release from his own
record company, Love Muffin Records, is entitled "You Can't Escape Life". The CD was mixed and mastered by Rich's
collaborator Jared Levengood at Creme Deluxe Studios in Toledo, Ohio. Although
Rich is most widely recognized as the bass player for the heavy metal band Girth,
"You Can't Escape Life" allows Rich to break that mold by cleverly blending rock,
punk and metal influences into a sound with great complexity and commercial
appeal.
"You Can't Escape Life" is a mixture of instrumentals and songs with guest
vocalists. The CD begins with an instrumental called "Frizzhead," which exemplifies
Rich's guitar talents. The next song, "Perfect," featuring vocalist Derek DePrater
is a high energy punk influenced number deserving of widespread airplay. "Perfect"
is followed by the title track with Alex "Xela" Alvarez on vocals and instrumental
effects from Rich that make the song a hit. The fourth song "Vultures" is one of two
written and sung by Levengood and is very melodic. "Glittery Eyes" is as close to a
rock ballad as you'll find on the CD and it is followed by a high energy "Go Away
Mr. Telemarketer," featuring the singing of Brian May. "Whirling Dervish" is a great
instrumental and one of only three songs where Rich does the drumming. Rich changes
it up a bit with the guitar instrumental "Big Blue" which is exotic, complex and
quite beautiful and the CD ends with "Huh?" a just-under four minute love
triangle of bass, guitar and drums.
Adam Rich is a gifted songwriter who clearly loves what he's doing. He's in a good
band; he owns his own record label and has released a great solo CD. His talent as a
writer is without dispute; his songs range from angry and edgy to sweet and even
funny. The choice to incorporate so many guest vocalists helps to make each song
unique and well textured. "You Can't Escape Life" is a well-rounded release
deserving of attention and praise.
