ichard Andersson for the uninitiated is the king of
the neo-classical keyboard world. Like Malmsteen,
Andersson hails from Sweden and has over the last
decade led such acts as Majestic, Time Requiem and
Space Odyssey. Andersson's work throughout these
projects has been uniformly high, yet ever the
perfectionist Andersson has seen fit to re-record
selected tracks from across his career to deliver 'The
Ultimate Andersson Collection'.
The original intention was to get several high profile
guests on the album - with Yngwie being a high
priority, unfortunately scheduling meant this was not
possible so Space Odyssey guitar whiz Magnus Nilsson
provides the bulk of guitar. This is not to be seen
as a disappointed as Nilsson is a highly competent
player himself. One of Andersson's keyboard idols
Jens Johansson (ex Malmsteen) has also contributed a
guest solo, but the biggest accomplishment is perhaps
getting another ex Malmsteen alumni in vocalist Goran
Edman to sing vocals. This initially perked my
interest as Edman is my favourite Malmsteen vocalist
and so it was with much interest to hear how he
interpreted these songs.
Sonically the album is excellent, the Time Requiem and
Space Odyssey tracks had no production faults on their
original releases, but the new sound for the Majestic
re-recordings is superb. The neo-classical slant of
Confusicus is an album highlight, with some blazing
work from Nilsson. Likewise Voodoo Treasure has new
life breathed into it and Edman's vocals are a
particular treat here. The Time Requiem and Space
Odyssey tracks are interesting new interpretations
mostly down to Edman - musically the arrangements are
not that different but to hear new solos from Nilsson
and Andersson will make this an essential purchase for
Andersson fans, as well as the uninitiated.
The album has 2 bonus track from pre Majestic days - 1
a blistering instrumental entitled The Flight Of The
Sun, a demo from 1988 which shows Andersson's unique
style was in place well before Majestic hit the scene.
The other bonus track This Time is a commercial
rocker that by no means up to the standard of later
works is a nice pull from the archives.
The Ultimate Andersson collection is an excellent
starting point for anyone that wants to get into the
music of Richard Andersson - a rewarding experience -
as well as the hardcore fan.
