Review of "Reflections"
|
By: Brynn McKenna
his talented young California-based guitarist and vocalist has a very good chance at hitting it big one day soon. Yes, his music is 80's inspired, but it sounds fabulous and its not a mindless rehash. His lyrics are intelligent, thoughtful and meaningful. You could say that it's an 80's inspired sound with a 90's attitude. The guitar work is phenomenal, from the dreamy acoustic to the jaz inspired to the blistering heavy electric riffing. Vocally Richard James sounds like a
youthful Geddy Lee, Sebastian Bach, Bon Jovi, Scorpions combo. But again - the lyrics are more mature, more meaningful. "Hometown Hero" is the
tale of a war veteran who risks his ass for his country, comes home and finds that nobody gives a damn. "Rocket Man" is not a cover of Elton
John's hit - rather a positive message from Richard with a 60's air about it. "Groove This" and "Marshmallow Squeeze" are the height of
cool. This twelve song disc bears the sounds of a future legend. He has worked on some radio commercials and a children's sing-along video, but
Richard James is much too talented to remain a studio session artist. Once the alternagrunge thing has run its course (and it will), I can
forsee trends going in this direction. Very easily.
