Review of "Here Before"
|
f you were expecting straight-ahead blues-rock from a hot three-man bar band, you're in for a real treat. Stone is red hot (and blue) enough to get gigs at the House of Blues. And, they just happened to walk off with a science fiction award for their song, "Teaser", in John Carpenter's flick,."Vampires". Brad Wilson (guitar), Alex James (bass) and J.J. Garcia (drums) have been making music for three years and during that time they have had the good fortune to expand their base of operations throughout the states in a series of well-timed tours. Their music is much more textured than the average set of Harley cowboys with guitars puts out. These guys are musically top motch. Opening with the rompin' title track, by the time they reach "Cool Running", they are laying on layers of swirling guitar and multi-rhythm drums and bass. Some feat! Here are 14 very listenable cuts, most composed by Wilson. However, the true mark of a great bar band is how well they handle the classic songs that are requested night after night. Here they breathe new life into Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me To Do", Bobby Bland's "Further Up The Road" and the classic Willie Dixon composition, "I Just Want To Make Love To You". Stone is set to be the next "big thing" from L.A. and this CD makes that point early and often. Quite remarkable!
