n the musical originality scale, Bumblefoot's CD, "Hands", ranks right up there with releases from Mr. Bungle and Faith No More. As a matter of fact, Bumblefoot can sometimes be mistaken for either of those bands. Hell, there's even a bit of "War Pigs," a Faith No More live staple, on a hidden track near the end of the CD. This is anything but a rip-off band though.
Bumblefoot blends funk and alternative metal with a bit of rap, traditional rock, and God knows what else, to produce some incredibly inspired, scorching songs. The only drawback is that some of the tunes contain too many styles, making them sound almost forced. The majority of them, however, move like Antonio Banderas' character in Deperado.
One such song, "Drunk," with its chorus of "Re-tasting nachos/Exhaling beer/I love getting drunk," exemplifies how musicially brilliant this band can be. Ron Thal (guitar and vocals) and Jeff Thal (drums), the fellas who make up Bumblefoot, know how to tweak a song to the point of combustion. These musical arsonists obviously have talent, now they have to learn to trust it and not push so hard. Why burn down a building with ten gallons of gasoline when it only takes one drop with a well-placed match?
"Hands", which was released by Hermit, Inc., is heads above the rest of the substandard garbage that many people consider music these days. Bumblefoot's next CD should set the world on fire...or at least get it a little drunk.
