Three greatly respected ex-guitarists from Mr. Big, Extreme and Genesis met in Japan for a special live recording, entitled Guitar Wars Live (the companion disc to the "Guitar Wars" disc, with a different set list), with a special guest, ex-Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, in attendance as well. The multi-generational backgrounds of all three proponents created a most interesting dynamic. This unique event, a celebration of Hard Rock Cafe's 20th anniversary in Japan, brought together "super guitarists" from different genres and backgrounds. So it was that Steve Hackett shared the spotlight for three nights with Jones, Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big and Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt. Completing the line-up were drummer Pat Mastelotto from King Crimson, Roger King on keyboards and Mike Szuter on bass.
