Review of "Every Mile"
|
ith just the right touch, classic 1960s rock sensibilities can be swayed this way and that, resulting in some exciting new music. Following an ecstatic reception at New York's Glens Falls Blues Festival this year, Vermont's Nobby Reed Project is slowly but surely infiltrating the rest of the Northeast. Their most recent CD, Every Mile, is a thouroughly enjoyable melange of meat and potatoes blues with a sharp rock edge. Reed's a guitarist who grew up in the golden age of Allman, Clapton, Santana, and Hendrix. He doesn't cop blatently, instead honing in on a style that allows fleeting glimpses of those players and many others - some associated with the blue, some with rock. "Have You Heard" and "Condition Blue" are both Texas-styled shuffles, the former hinting at Johnny Winter, the latter satisfying a Stevie Ray Vaughan jones. The instrumental "Tele-Jellie" is like an infectious blend of Albert Collins and Jeff Beck, while the distinct swinging tempos and change-ups employed by The Allman Brothers Band characterize "Green Mountain Magic", another first-rate instrumental. "Just A Little" is a little funky, "Joyful Noise" slightly otherworldly. Those two in fact, are the very best tracks on the album because they're the most original sounding among this entire batch of original compositions. See what all the fuss is about up in Vermont and get a hold of the Reed Project's records.
