oonlight Comedy were formed in 1998 in Italy and first came to the public eye with
a self released debut album which led to a deal with Lion Music for 'The Life
Inside' in 2004 which was a good representation of the prog metal genre. 2007 sees
the band build upon that release ten-fold with their new opus 'Dorothy'. Granted
some progressive fans may initially be put off by the quite heavily accented vocals
from Emiliano Germani (the band are Italian but sing in English) yet after a few
spins his voice works well within the bands framework and certainly helps accent the
bands original take on the progressive metal genre. Stars of the show are
undoubtedly guitarist Simone Fiorletta and drummer Andrea Scala, yet don't overlook
the importance that bassist Armando Pizzuti and keyboardist Gianluigi Farina play in
the bands sound; on to the music review,
'Intro Desire & Whisper' is a brief female spoken word intro which paves the way for
'Solar Eclipse' to kick seven yards of pain out of you. The intensity and
musicianship displayed here from all band members is nothing short of breathtaking
with a production (and guitar sound from Fiorletta) that is massive. What will
immediately jump out is the band use of almost industrial and dance like colourings
which although quite well back in the mix (most of the time) adds more interest to
the sound and works well. The songs intensity calms for a very melodic chorus which
works nicely with the aggression elsewhere. The intense keyboard/guitar solos are
particularly impressive and will surely put a smile on any prog metal fans face.
'Fallin Under' has a nice chunky riff which fans of bands like Sun Caged and Adagio
will appreciate and here Simone Fiorletta is again the star of the show utilising
the tremolo bar to really throw some chords around before falling back into super
tight synchronised riffing with bass, drums and keys, Another great chorus will be
stuck in your head for days and Emiliano Germani's vocals sounds great here. The
pace doesn't let up for 'The Sea And Time Of Mars' which again is home to impressive
musicality that will tear your head off in terms of delivery, The aforementioned
programming is more prominent here and will take a few listens to get used to but
another great chorus again shows great melodies. "Metamorfosi" is like Pink Floyd
on steroids at the start before Fiorletta guitar work almost transcends into sludge
territory with more tremolo bar manipulations on chords before settling on a more
even riff. If you think Dream Theater produce some of the most intense
keyboard/guitar/drums instrumentations around prepare re-evaluate that view with
'Dorothy'. "Lunar Eclipse" gives you 2:41 of breathing space with its gentile
guitar and vocals before 'Into Whispers & Desire' builds upon this theme into a real
gem in terms of instrumentation and voice and is another highlight and shows real
class and originality in song arrangement - another highlight amongst many!
'Imperfect Mind' takes us back to the early sound i.e. well performed intense
riffery and a production that only adds to the effect. Again the vocal melodies are
strong (and original) and another blistering solo section will get all guitar (and
keyboard) enthusiasts dissecting this stuff note by note. 'Dust Of The Past' is a
short piano piece from Gianluigi Farina which leads into the haunting ',And Why
Not?' which is more traditional prog metal sounding than many of its predecessors
and again Fiorletta delivers a sublime solo (this time using the wah to add tonal
texture) before the very catchy chorus will reel you in once again. The album
closes in true prog metal epic style with 'Side Effects' which clocks in at almost
12 minutes. A delicate start of clean guitar and vocals allows the production to
shine with great width and depth before kicking in at 1:27 for a great keyboard solo
over another very interesting guitar rhythm part from here the tracks fangs come out
for a variety of tempo changes and textural mood swings - great stuff and a very
enjoyable closer.
'Dorothy' is not an album that can be figured out in one sitting. I am probably
over the 20 listens mark and still don't have it down as there are always new things
popping out. One thing is very clear, Moonlight Comedy have come of age with
'Dorothy' and should be viewed in the same class as prog metal genre leaders. It's
a highly original sound, with stunning musicianship, unique vocals yet melodies that
can easily absorbed and overall it's a highly recommended release for any prog metal
fan - just give it time to sink in.
