Review of "Electric Roots"

letter hose who follow the Rootstime discussions weekly, will, have seen that there the last times there were also a few times fusion giuitarists reviewed! People who generally play instrumental music, without vocals, so far we had the phenomenal Phil Brown from Austin Texas, from Madrid Spain we had Jose De Castro, of which we even determined a special of 3 CDs. Both are virtuose guitarists, who add themselves just like Jeff Beck especially on the technique instrumental music and try to find their own sounds and style, without trying to sound boring and just emphasize on their ability to show off their talent.

As from now on you can add a new name to the list of great guitarists in the line we covered the last few months The Italian Nicola Costa and his new CD called "Electric Roots". Just like the two named after predecessors he is able to deliver the most marvellous consonances from its instrumental magic, generally, however, using all kinds of equipment, but belief me, these provide a more than a great result, and his music falls in the same leugue as the music of Phil and Jose, because at all these artists add a portion of blues to their fusion sound.

The title "Electric Roots" is therefore not at all out of place and covers entirely the cargo.

Of course you cannot think too narrowly in terms of blues, it remains fusion with some very tecnical jazzy like highlights , leaning towards the sound of Robben ford or Micheal Lee Firkins, but instrumentals of Nicola have some bluesey vibe in each song, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

All songs are written by Nicola, and it starts out with a song which reminds of "Left Turn" by Jeff Beck and is somewhat along the line of "Scatterbrain".

On "The bridge" we hear tight funky beats on which Nicola plays the most wonderfull plays guitar solo with Beck as a large example.

Right after that we get blues, which can be compared best with the layed back Hendrix and SRV songs, in "Little Boy Blues" with a nice hammond organ passage of Ettore Gentile.

Also the drummer Christiano Micalizzi is worth mentioning, during the entire cd he is tight and smoothly, a class drummer in this genre, at the same time.

Also still a song where a considerable portion of blues is "Blue Day" a song in Scott Henderson style. Virtuoso!

"Get On Dreamin" has not stolen its name, a thoughtful number with elements of (yes) Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan mixed.

Still worth mentioning is "Burnin Night" a number song that seems along the lines of the work of Govt Mule and where the typical Beck sound is audible again during the solos.

The cd ends with a song called "Goodbye B", a jazzy song with great tone and talent. we were extremely surprised by this unknown artist who brings qualitatively high standard music. Nicola Costa, is a name to remember!
