If you get nothing else from visiting Guitar Nine, you should at least remember that this site is devoted to Instrumental Guitar music, in all styles, modes, approaches and flavors.
Instrumental guitar is not really a category in a record store. You can't just go to a Tower Records or a Wherehouse Music and shout, "Show me all of your instrumental guitar records!" If the clerk even knows what you are talking about, he or she will probably say, "We've got some in jazz, a couple in rock, and I think some of the New Age guys play guitar." Don't ask him which ones are which; he doesn't know, and probably doesn't care.
Guitar Nine was created because I do care. I had an interesting time putting together an instrumental guitar "collection" because a lot of times it was impossible to know whether or not a recording had vocals. Sometimes you could read the credits on the back of the CD and see that there was no singer listed. Other times however, a singer might be listed, and it wasn't until later that you figured out they only sang on a single song. If you ever figured it out.
Which is why, for every CD Guitar Nine sells on the site, we tell you exactly which tracks are instrumental. Now, I'll repeat this next phrase a lot -- we live in the Information Age. If someone has information about a product (like the record label that pressed the CD, for example), it sure would be nice if they would share that information with consumers. Since they don't, and they typically provide only a bare minimum of information about their products, it falls on a third party to provide this data.
So right off the bat you've got one major problem solved -- how to identify which recordings are truly instrumental guitar. Go to some of the biggest Internet music outlets (Amazon, CD Universe, Tower Records, Best Buy) or go to your local record store and see what kind of help is provided in this area. These companies have millions of dollars at their disposal, but they can't help you. They don't want to help you. They just want to sell to everyone -- all music for all people. If your tastes are narrow, focused and specific, tough luck.
Well, not any more.
