Review of "Defense Mechanizms"
|
By: John Nicholas
Michael Harris' solo CD "Defense Mechanizms" is a neoclassical metal release with a good sense of melody. The songs are definitely heavy and sometimes reminiscent of David T. Chastain without as many fusion touches. His background as guitarist in a vocal band shows in his catchy rhythm parts. Notable songs on this CD include "Tranz-Orbital Schizophrenia", an excellent blend of off beat rhythms and a memorable melody, and the emotional ballad "Mind or Heart?" and the commercial rock song "Collision Course" which shows he isn't a one trick guitarist. There is plenty of high speed gothic metal for neoclassical fans including an arrrangement from Mozart's 25th symphony.
