onsistent Variation is the story of Rob Eberhard Young's two year
transition from serious 80's style shredder into powerful solo acoustic
songwriter. The entire album was penned and performed during a two week
period in Rob's apartment, his only direction and inspiration being a single
acoustic guitar and as many weird tunings as his fingers could stumble
across.
On first listen, the realisation that this album was written in such a short
time and in this stripped down - candid fashion, is pretty astonishing...my
expectation was for the majority of songs to be meandering, noodling
affairs; I recieved one hell of a shock!
The nine songs on Consistent Variation sound strikingly raw, but this
actually adds to the grass roots vibe of the album, and what lacks in audio
refinement, is countered by Rob's passion and improvisational skill.
Highlights include the opener 'Wandering Minds', which demonstrates Rob's
incredible rhythmic sense, the soulful ballad 'Jeremy', and the utterly
mesmerising 'Perfect Strangers'.
Rob's sheer enthusiasm for his new found voice and the relentlessnes of his
melodic invention makes Consistent Variation a must have for any fan of
primal acoustic guitar.
