Review of "Coming To Your Senses"
|
By: Geof O`Keefe
aking his label debut on Steve Vai's new Favored Nations label, Australian fret whiz Frank Gambale returns with his first solo offering since '95's "Thinking out Lou"d. While that smooth jazz-oriented release was a departure from his usual blazing fusion style, fans will be happy to hear that not only is Coming To Your Senses a return to
form, it's quite possibly the best Gambale release ever.
Rich with melody, tracks such as "Cybernaughts" and "Circular Quay" dance about with vibrant multi-tracked harmony passages and guitar/keyboard counterplay. Backed by bassist Ric Fierabracci, Hans Zermhuelen on keys and four different drummers on various tracks, the crisp production (by Gambale himself, who also wrote and arranged everything) emphasizes Frank's magnificent solos. Featuring his trademark "sweep picking," Gambale is one of the few guitarists who manages to combine a blindingly-fast technique with a strong sense of melody. The stop/start soloing in the middle of the otherwise-sedate "Mirage Mystery" is actually startling in its fury, while "Loch Ness Monster" is a punchy Dixie Dregs-sounding workout from start to finish and features some positively scary trade-offs between Gambale and keyboardist Zermhuelen. Not a weak cut on the album- highly recommended.
