Hello everyone! This time I will try to spice up a bit more the Dorian mode using a diminished "way". Let's get started.

If you compare the intervals of the Dorian mode and a diminished chord (both on the same root) you will notice G Dorian is G A Bb C D E F, while G diminished is G Bb Db E (root, b3, b5, 6). Only the Db does not make an appearance on the G Dorian scale but it does appear on the G minor blues pentatonic scale: G Bb C Db D F (root, b3, 4, b5, 5, 7). Do not forget the G minor6 blues pentatonic scale (terrific B.B. King sounding): G Bb C Db D E (root, b3, 4, b5, 5, 6).

I will show you a few examples to clear it up!

Example 1. On "Street Dog Bone" (off "Coastline", my new instrumental release) there is an idea using an extended diminished pattern and tapping. (E minor - MP3).

 --E--------------9-12-15-12-9------------------------
 --B---------11---------------------------------------
 --G---9-12-------------------------------------------
 --D--------------------------------------------------
 --A--------------------------------------------------
 --E--------------------------------------------------

                                (slide tapping)
 --E----------------9-12-15------18-21-18-15-12-9-----
 --B---11----11---------------------------------------
 --G------12------------------------------------------
 --D--------------------------------------------------
 --A--------------------------------------------------
 --E--------------------------------------------------

 --E--------------------------------------------------
 --B-------11-----------------------------------------
 --G-----------12-9-----------------------------------
 --D--------------------11----------------------------
 --A------------------------12----10------------------
 --E--------------------------------------------------

Example 2. On "Coastline", I used the idea of angular lines, inspired by Steve Vai. (D minor - MP3).

 --E------------------10-13-16------------------------
 --B-------------12-------------15----15--------------
 --G---10-13-----------------------13----13-----------
 --D--------------------------------------------------
 --A--------------------------------------------------
 --E--------------------------------------------------

 --E--------------------------------------------------
 --B--------------------------------------------------
 --G--------13-----------10(htb)----18(htbwt)---------
 --D---12------12-------------------------------------
 --A---------------11(htb)----------------------------
 --E--------------------------------------------------

 htb= halftone bend
htbwt = halftone bend with tapping

You can hear a brief demonstration of how to apply this concept on this MP3.

Check it out! That does it for the Dorian mode topic. Thank you very much, and do not forget to visit my web page at www.miguelmega.com.br.
