Review of "Cognition"
|
By: Wayne Klinger
ome of you guitar listeners and musicians may remember this guy or the band he was
in back in the 80's from Hawaii... Sacred Rite. I consider them one of the reasons
why I got into Metal in the first place. I don't count Kiss, Zep and all
those...those are Hard Rock...I mean real METAL! You get the idea.
"Cognition" is Jimmy's thirteenth release overall counting the SR material back in
the day but he has been keeping himself very busy since relocating to Arizona. This
album threw me off actually since I thought it may be a shredding release but no,
wait. This guy has taken a somber and more subtle approach on this 11-track outting
that's broken up into three parts. I was just amazed of how smoothly this album went
by...took another listen and just floored me with all the atmosphere, emotion and
great style this guy has..I mean you can't even categorize a common ground as far as
influences. Kind of like James Byrd; alot of people say Neo-Classical but he sounds
nothing like Yngwie, Stump, Bellas or anyone else into that genre. Caterine is the
same way. He falls into a certain style but has his own skill, sound and thinking.
Caterine keeps a Bach-ish, Mozart-ish theme throughout this CD but his playing is
other than that and the two mix really well together. This CD just proves you don't
have to be fast or heavy to be spontaneous; made a believer out of me. CD's are
available through Jim's website or Guitar 9.
