Review of "Cinefusion"
|
By: Marcelo Silveyra
are Blend is a unit that actually reminded me of the style of a few guitarists whose stuff I definitely can point out: Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana, and Jeff Beck. Guitar-driven instrumentals backed by cool-sounding keyboard lines, the tracks on this record are just flowing with the attitude and taste of the high caliber of my aforementioned references. Sure, the fact that the drums are programmed and the bass is really not much more than a backup instrument does give the impression that this is somewhat of a guitar hero record, but the perfectly synchronized activity of guitarist Vic Samalot and keyboardist Bobbi Holt is just way too enjoyable to actually pay much heed to such "details."
One of the greatest features about Cinefusion is its multidimensional focus, in which a variety of feelings and ambiences are explored with a free spirit that allows the unique character of each track to shine through. "Breaking the Sound Barrier" is one of those cool tracks that one would play while driving along some dream California beach, "Isabella" has a moody Latin flavor to it, "Fallout at 2114" hits a chord with its melancholic drama, and the delicious "You Gotta Funky Attitude",well, there's really no need to explain that one. Perhaps the music does not break any barriers or pretend to bring something resplendently new to the listener, but it is so refreshingly cool that it's really hard to care at all. Well worth a listen.
