must admit that I had begun to despair of ever hearing Larry Coryell cut loose and be involved in another aggressive and intelligent release. "Cause And Effect" is far more interesting than anything Larry has done in years. Each track is driven by Steve Smith's powerful and creative drumming, Tom Coster's "distorted" keys, and guest bassist Victor Wooten's groove. The disc opens with the odd-meter powerhouse "These Are Odd Times," which could easily be a fusion anthem. Then there are the funky, laid back grooves of "Bubba" (appropriately titled) and the jazz/blues "First Things First". Coryell marks his return in full force and Smith is clearly becoming one of the most solid and well-rounded drummers in the business. "Cause And Effect" is another excellent release from the courageous Tone Center label and is highly recommended
