letter asino showcases DiMeola's most blazing moments as an electric fusion artist, he was borrowing from the success he found with Return to Forever, by utilizing a similar compositional approach, his fondness for world-fusion influences such as Flamenco, Classical, & Latin was steadily finding it's way into his repertoire, cleverly contibuting these styles into his already hyperkinetic version of technical fusion. Surrounding himself with other virtuoso musicians allows him to challenge the parameters of complexity, speed, and all of the diverse style hybrids he incorporates into his signature sound. As jazz/rock fusion goes, this is to remain a classic in the style, as DiMeola quickly became a household word in guitarist circles for his muted picking style, lightning fast stacatto attack, and his use of legato and arpeggiated phrasing, both on electric and acoustic guitar. He was quite different than the blues based, or rock based players of his day, and brought a fresh take on the blending of unconventional styles to this challenging format called jazz/rock.
