Review of "Cab"

letter usion lives! Absolutely one of the best straight-ahead releases of the ever-shrinking genre. Without sounding dated, "CAB" revisits the classic Return To Forever/Mahavishnu-styled fusion of the 70s. Jaw-dropping playing from three of the best players around, and strong compositions (7 of the 10 written or co-written by bassist Brunel). MacAlpine, more fusion and less neoclassical metallic here than on his solo releases, shines on both guitar and keyboards. Among the stand-outs are "So There Is Love," "Elastic Man" and the killer title track with its sweeping chorus section and solo breaks from all three. Chambers, who must record an album a day with someone somewhere, is blindingly fancy when he needs to be while still maintaining the groove. The album closes with the beautiful "Bernard," a ballad in the Jeff Beck/Gary Moore soaring guitar style. A musician's feast and fusion at its very best. Support it!
