Review of "Cab"

By: Dave Dorkin

letter he latest from Tone Center features a powerful trio composed of guitarist/keyboardist Tony MacAlpine, bassist Bunny Brunel, and drummer Dennis Chambers. Though MacAlpine is better known for his work in a heavy rock context, he has plenty of chops and an obvious taste for fusion. Chambers is monstrous as always and Brunel is in very good form here on the all original set. On the funky "Just Perfect" and "One for Stern", the group digs up some grit and on the latter, MacAlpine even contributes an organ solo. MacAlpine's Latin-tinged "Alpine Man" is a fine change of pace and the set closes with "Bernard," a showcase for Brunel's fretless. A welcome surprise from CAB. Recommended.
