Review of "Black Utopia"
|
By: Wayne Klinger
ll hail the keyboard wizard! "Black Utopia" by far is the best Sherinian release ever put to CD. He's pulled out all the stops. If you thought about "what if" Malmsteen hooked up with Zakk Wylde and what it would sound like. It's here! "Axis Of Evil" showcases these two trading off like some spaghetti western back in the 60's. Wait, we're not done! Malmsteen also teams-up with Al DiMeola on "Sons Of Anu", a 3-part track that's a little over 7 minutes. More veterans show up on here like Toto's Steve Lukather nad Simon Phillips, Tony Franklin (Blue Murder/The Firm), Billy Sheehan (needs no intro) and violinist Jerry Goodman. The CD is just some unbelievably heavy Progressive art; some Rock, some almost Thrash but there's also sultry moments showing the mellower sideof these individuals as well as Derek's terrific display of keyboard control and decimation. There's also a cover of Jeff Beck's "Star Cycle" for your perusal. This is a definate must for your instrumental collection. Fans of Vitalij Kuprij and Tony MacAlpine will worship this.
