Review of "Black Light Syndrome"

By: John Nicholas

letter ozzio/Levin/Stevens is a collaboration between drummer Terry Bozio (Zappa), bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson) and guitarist Steve Stevens (Atomic Playboys, Billy Idol). Unlike most instrumental releases, "Black Light Syndrome" is much more of a group project than a guitarist spotlight and even more unusual, it is mostly improvised with some editing and overdubs. These players are of the caliber to be able to pull it off, though as in all improvised recordings the songs can tend to wander. The songs are very textural and use sounds as wide-ranging as flamenco and ray gun sounds, the later courtesy of Stevens who built a toy ray gun into one of his guitars back in his Billy Idol days. The end result could easily have been a CD full of wierd musician experiments like Steve Vai's "Flexable" but there are many sections of very lyrical and musical playing.
