March, 1998 More [Artist Bios]

Rob Johnson is a dazzling, altogether exciting six-stringer from Columbus, Ohio (U.S.A.) who reveals his style as intense, melodic, unpredictable, technical, crazy guitar music, as one can clearly experience on his latest album, "Guitarchitecture". photoHis favorite guitars include an Ibanez 7-string and a Greco 7-string. Johnson has played guitar since 1984, and freely declares his career aspiration, "I want to expose my playing and music to as many people as possible. I'm not really into being a 'rock star' or 'guitar hero.' I just enjoy creating, and I hope people that like guitar-oriented music will continue to listen to mine!"

When requested to reveal his ultimate effect for the guitar, Johnson came back with, "Eventide H3000," and then brought up his musicial goals, "To continue improving... while having fun! Also to show that I can be a versatile guitar player." He fervently hopes to one day study jazz, but really in depth ("I have a little background in it that sometimes shows in my style, but I would like to get real good at it. I'd also like to learn more about recording and engineering techniques"), and is at this time listening to Yngwie Malmsteen, Fates Warning, Allan Holdsworth, Messuggah, Dream Theater and Joe Satriani. His primary fulfillment? "The feeling I get when my new album that I've been working on all year is finally mixed and finished! And of course, people that tell me they enjoy what I play," he affirms conclusively.

photoJohnson concludes by listing continuing and future undertakings succinctly, by saying, "I'm starting to write and record my next instrumental guitar CD to be out hopefully in late 1998 or early 1999. I also have a new band CD out this May. We are called "Magnitude 9", a vocal band similar to Yngwie Malmsteen, Fates Warning and Dream Theater, but with shred solos."

Guitar Nine Records visitors have compared the playing style and/or musical approach of Rob Johnson to guitarists such as Zorro A, John Petrucci and others.

Johnson's discography (available here at Guitar Nine Records) includes several solo albums ("Peripheral", "Rob Johnson", "Guitarchitecture") and participation on a number of other recordings (The Alchemists "The Alchemists", Jason Becker Trib. "Warmth In The Wilderness", Magnitude 9 "Chaos To Control", Magnitude 9 "Reality In Focus", Magnitude 9 "Decoding The Soul", Mattsson "Another Dimension", Saddleback Shark "The Killing System").
