Larry Steen is a unmistakable and seasoned musician/bassist currently based in Los Angeles, California (U.S.A.) who denotes his playing style as world contemporary jazz-fusion, as a music fan can hear on his most recent recording, "View From Afar". His workhorse basses consist of a Sadowsky 5-string bass and a Fernandes fretless 5-string. Steen has been playing bass since 1978, and putting it simply, relates his career objective, "More recording and touring with my own group and other creatively rewarding projects."
When requested to let slip his top choice for an effect for the bass, Steen resolutely answered, "Korg A-4 pedalboard for live purposes and an Eventide in the studio," and then outlined his musicial goals, "The interconnection and spiritual uplifting of humanity via the experience of music. On a less lofty note, the fusing of world rhythms and elements with the harmonic sophistication of jazz and classical music." He maintains a desire to, at some point, study the analysis and understanding of specific late 19th and 20th century classical composers, as well as more Middle Eastern and Eastern European music, and is at the moment listening to various composers and artists of the late 19th and 20th century. His most important gratification? "Musically speaking, playing creatively rewarding music for an attentive and enthusiastic audience. Also, listening back to the rough mixes of a great recording session as I drive away from the studio," he explains without hesitation.
Steen winds up by mentioning long-term and forthcoming endeavors insightfully, by saying, "Composing and arranging more music for my original project, freelancing in a variety of groups and recording sessions in the Southern California area ranging from jazz, funk-R&B and classical to West African, Brazilian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern."
