Jimmy Dee Caterine is a highly regarded, vital guitarist from Honolulu, Hawaii (U.S.A.) who describes his style as symphonic art rock, as documented on his latest release, "Cognition". His guitars of choice consist of a '80s Customized Charvel Dinky Strat and a Le Patri Etude Classical. Caterine has played guitar since 1976, and openly affirms his career goal, "Coming off a five year hiatus from any sort of public view and seeing
how much the industry has changed in that time frame, it makes it very difficult to
set any type of real goal as far as musical career goes. I have already accomplished
most of my career goals. My left arm was completely paralyzed due to injury for the
better part of 1999 and 2000. So to be quite honest, I am just grateful to be able to
play again. I will say, I intend to maintain my artistic freedom."
When prompted to reveal his preferred effect for the guitar, Caterine responded with, "Delay," and offered his musicial goals, "My musical goals are somewhat undefined as I have already seen moderate success. My instrument is mainly a tool for my own personal wellness. I use my instrument to express things that I find difficult to express with words. It's my way of getting things off my chest. I think I would like to take every emotion and express them all in one twisted masterpiece of a composition." He would like to someday study quarter tone theory, and is currently listening to Uli Jon Roth "Metamorphosis", Ritchie Kotzen "Acoustic Cuts", Pink Floyd "Animals",
Journey "Departure" and Days of the New "Green CD". His greatest satisfaction? "When someone expresses to me what they felt from something I recorded and it happens to be the same thing I felt when I recorded it," he states unambiguously.
Caterine notes ongoing and upcoming projects thusly, "I had some old friends ask me to do some metal, like I did with Sacred Rite. I actually have some material that I started recording before the injury to my arm that sort of fits that description. I dug out my scratch tracks from that session and it seemed to fit well with some of the more recent stuff that I've written. So I'm presently working on completing that as a project. There are a couple real shredders on it as far as solo work goes, which is a little out of sorts for me, but so far I'm having a lot of fun with it. The style isn't entirely different from my current release but the high points are much more intense. I'm also currently writing some music for classical guitar, violin and piano, but that is a project I will look forward to down the road."
Caterine's discography (available here at Guitar Nine Records) includes several recording projects (Caterine "Cognition", Caterine "Fear-Pain-Love").
