Dave Kulju is a seasoned and unmistakable musician/guitarist currently based in Rochester, New Hampshire (U.S.A.) who denotes his playing style as instrumental progressive rock, as one might want to hear on his most recent recording, "Abstract Expression". His workhorse guitars consist of a Neil Bryan Custom Guitar Model NBC-P and a Model NBC-T. Kulju has been playing guitar since 1982, and truthfully shares his career objective, "As an indie playing instrumental progressive music I have to be
realistic about the degree of commercial success I'll achieve. So I
focus on being best musician/composer I can, recording and engineering
my works as well as possible, and then trying to get the product of
that labor out into my niche market with viral marketing. From there
I'm content to let the chips fall where they may."
When the attempt was made to uncover his definitive or preferred effect for the guitar, Kulju purposefully responded with, "TC Electronics G-Force," and then volunteered his musicial goals, "To express a greater range of emotions and ideas, in greater shades and
nuances." He keeps open the possibility to, at some point, study orchestration, and is at the moment listening to Echolyn, Hydria Spacefolk, Steve Morse, Andy Summers, and Niacin. His most important gratification? "Compstion and arranging," he muses emphatically.
Kulju winds up by detailing long-term and forthcoming endeavors insightfully, by saying, "I'll be recording a follow up to "Abstract Expression", work on a new Electrum
album, and perhaps start a space rock project with an eye to doing more
live playing."
Guitar Nine Records visitors have compared the playing style and/or musical approach of Dave Kulju to guitarists such as Alex Lifeson and others.
Kulju's discography (available here at Guitar Nine Records) includes one solo album ("Abstract Expression") and participation on a number of other recordings (Electrum "Frames Of Mind", Electrum "Standard Deviation", Gino Foti "Sphere Of Influence", Gino Foti "Orbis Terrarum").
