Review of "Anomalies"
|
By: Matt Williams
o-one can say they're not getting their money's worth with Anomalies. From the
Zappa/Vai-driven ambitions of 'Reunion', 'Spindly Thing' and 'Ufology' through to
the dance/latin/alien-rhythms of 'Mister Phi' or the spiritual, ritualistic chants
of 'Wandering Spirit'. The relaxing, dreamlike tones of 'Fractual Self'; the quirky
mixture of intense rhythms and repetitive yet beguiling melodies of the title track;
the weird yet seductive drum & bass grooves of 'Dead Ends'/'Dancing Mucalytics'; the
film score vibes of 'Inhabit the Mind'; or the insane keyboard-meets-mutated
electric guitar explosions of 'The Secret Weapon' and 'Psychocism'. All point to one
thing: an original, probing musician not content to confine his ideas within
conventional dimensions. Phi Yaan-Zek is a musical scientist; unwilling to embrace
the mundane, he has set out to disprove long-held ideas concerning melody, style and
instrumentation. Anomalies is Phi's laboratory, his songs his potions, mixed,
measured and distilled; quantities diluted or concentrated, ideas refined or
discarded. The results of his overwhelmingly successful experiments can be found on
this most entertaining of instrumental albums. Buy it in order to benefit from the
latest advances in musical science!
