Review of "A Christmas Carol"

By: John Hayes

letter ew Hampshire guitarist Bill Perry tried the band scene, taught music for a while, studied classical guitar and eventually gave up on music altogether. After 20 years away from the frets, he picked up his nylon-string with the hope, he wrote, of "bringing the true spirit of Christmas to the guitar repertoire."

There's nothing Scrooge-ish about Perry's "A Christmas Carol," and nowhere to hide on his first self-produced CD. Solo classical renditions of six holiday standards are well-played if a bit predictable, and four original compositions continue the familiar holiday theme.

Then, like an unexpected Christmas gift, Perry unwraps a captivating 10-minute five-movement musical telling of Charles Dickens' classic story. Musical embodiments of Marley's spirit and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future are clearly distinct, and the story climaxes with the warm glow of the true meaning of Christmas.
